Chongqing Changan Automobile Co is one of China’s leading car manufacturers and has ambitious plans to break into the global top ten in the next five years. As a part of this plan they are in the process of establishing European and US R&D centre’s to access expertise and technology and to develop models for those markets and have recently opened in Nottingham.
ChangAn - HQ located in Chongqing - is one of the fastest growing carmakers in China. Its sales have been increasing by around 30% annually. Production and sales of ChangAn cars ranks in the top 20 worldwide and is No.3 in China, with a capacity of 2 million units per year. ChangAn has 28,000 staff and operates 11 car-making factories. Changan's turnover in 2009 was just over RMB 60billion (approx. £6billion) Changan's global factories and offices cover over 12 countries, including US, Malaysia, Vietnam, US, Egypt, Iran, Mexico and Italy. It has developed partnerships with major OEMs including: ChangAn Suzuki Auto Corp (1993), ChangAn Ford Auto Corp (2001) and ChangAn Ford Nanjing Corp (2004).
ChangAn has set up R&D engineering centre’s in Shanghai and Chongqing as well as a styling centre in Turin, which opened in 2002. In 2008 ChangAn opened a further R&D centre in Yokohama. ChangAn invests heavily in R&D, about RMB1.9 billion in 2006, 4.6% of its annual sales.
